Contemporary Issue on Risk Management and Insurance

A highly impactful seminar on Contemporary Issues in Risk Management and Insurance was successfully held on 13 Baishakh 2082 (April 26, 2025) at Rubiz Inn Hotel, Biratnagar, with over 160 participants  from life, non-life, and micro-insurance companies across Nepal.
The program was organized by the Nepal Insurance and Risk  Management Association (NIRMA) in collaboration with the Nepal Insurance Professional Society (NIPS)Koshi. The event featured leading experts sharing insights on risk management, insurance principles and practices, emerging trends in the insurance sector, underwriting, claims management, and reinsurance,  actuarial analysis and fraud prevention.

About Seminar:

The opening session was chaired by Mr. Khadga Bahadur Shrestha, President of NIPS, and jointly inaugurated by Mr. Binod Pokharel (Chief of Koshi Province Office, Nepal Insurance Authority), Dr. Rabindra Ghimire (Chairman of NIRMA), and Mr. Shrestha himself (Chairman of NIPS, Koshi Province).

A special felicitation speech was delivered by Mr. Om Prakash Rathi, Central Committee Member of the Nepal Insurance Surveyors Association. He emphasized the importance of ethical practices among insurance professionals and urged the Nepal Insurance Authority to conduct regular training and refresher programs.

Mr. Damodar Bhandari, Assistant CEO of Nepal Reinsurance Company, stressed the role of training in enhancing business quality, reducing moral hazards, and uplifting the industry’s overall image. He reaffirmed Nepal Re’s strong commitment to professional development.

The session was moderated by Mr. Prakash Pokharel, Secretary of NIPS, while the welcome address was delivered by Mr. Pradip Babu Tiwari, Vice President of NIPS.

Program Objectives:

• To deliver advanced training on insurance principles, underwriting, claims management, and reinsurance.

• To equip participants with modern risk management techniques, including actuarial analysis and fraud prevention.

• To share global and regional best practices in insurance operations and compliance.

• To strengthen local expertise supporting insurance penetration and financial inclusion.

• To foster research and discussions on emerging trends in the insurance sector.

Technical Sessions:

The seminar featured five highly engaging technical sessions:

1. Dr. Rabindra Ghimire stressed the importance of integrity, honesty, and continuous learning in the insurance profession.

2. Mr. Binod Kumar Pokharel discussed corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and adherence to tariffs and documentation protocols.

3. Mr. Ishwar Pradhan shared best practices for effective claims management and underwriting, focusing on fraud prevention and sustainable operations.

4. Mr. Udaya Raj Adhikari highlighted existing gaps in Nepal’s insurance sector and called for greater transparency and client-centered service.

5. Mr. Narayan Kumar Bhattarai addressed challenges in the life insurance sector, emphasizing risk pooling, proper financing, and sustainable growth strategies.

This seminar successfully created a dynamic platform for dialogue, learning, and commitment to strengthening Nepal’s risk management and insurance industry.
